Margaret H. Bailey, 90, of Salinas, passed gently from this life in the early hours of December 14, 2011. She died as she wanted, comfortable in her own home. Margaret Louise Hankins was born May 15, 1921 in Springdale, Arkansas, graduated from the University of Arkansas with a Bachelor's degree in English, Phi Beta Kappa. She married Lester G. Bailey in 1941, resided in Fayetteville AR and Fort Smith, AR. Margaret and Les had three children; Lester Thomas (Tom), Anne Margaret, and Susan Roberta. The family relocated to Salinas in 1959, where she taught English and mathematics at El Sausal Junior High from 1959 until her retirement in 1990. During that time, she earned her Master's degree in Education from the University of San Francisco.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, Lester, in 1979, and by her daughter Anne Myers on May 10, 2011.
She is survived by her son Tom (Belinda), daughter Susan Kelley (Stuart), adopted daughter June Sulffridge (Gary), eight grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to thank Mary Hill, the caregivers, and the Salinas VNA Hospice for providing loving support and care. In lieu of flowers, donations to Salinas VNA Hospice or St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Margaret's name would be greatly appreciated.
Following a private burial, a Celebration of Life memorial service for all friends and family will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Thursday, December 22, at 1 p.m.
